Attempted murder charge filed in Pa.

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - A Mount Union, Pa., man was charged with attempted murder and other crimes last week, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Perry Henderson, 37, went to the McConnellsburg home of acquaintances Timothy J. Peck, 20, and his father, Alvin T. Peck, 39, on July 17 and demanded money from Timothy Peck, police said in a news release.

When Timothy Peck said he didn't have money, Henderson attacked him with a knife and said he would kill him if he didn't get money, police alleged.

Timothy Peck was wounded as Henderson stole $260, police said.

Police said Henderson also slapped Alvin Peck and punctured a tire on his 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera.

Police have asked anyone with information about Henderson's whereabouts to call them at 717-485-3131.

A burglary was discovered this afternoon at a jewelry store in Scranton.

Police said the owners of Boccardo Jewelers on Spruce Street opened late because of the snow storm. When they did they found someone had broken through the roof of the store sometime overnight. Police said a substantial amount of jewelry was stolen.

What is the proper response for the owner of this Jewelry store?
I say get some spy cameras on your roof and possible hire someone to either monitor your establishment or get high end cameras. They should have already been there and I am not saying they weren't it just wasn't part of this blurb.

Recent issues regarding DNA have been of great importance. One of those issues that has caused great concern is the desire of law enforcement agencies--from local, county, state and federal levels of government--to amass a huge database of DNA for use in solving crimes.

At first this sounds like a no-brainer. Using a DNA database to catch criminals sounds just like using fingerprints. The current process of using DNA requires some reason to request a suspects DNA. However, there have been encroachments on that process in many states that have passed a DNA collection process law. Under some such laws, anyone arrested is required to submit a DNA sample, but most laws require a conviction. This, too, sounds like a no-brainer, except when we realize that there are a number of DNA processing errors, including lab misconduct and errors. But anyone aware of the DNA fiascoes involved in the O.J. Simpson case, regardless of whether they believe the outcome of that case was correct or not, realizes that DNA is not an absolute science.

When the Human Genome Project was underway there was an international conference on the ethical consequences of such a powerfully compelling science. I was fortunate to be asked to contribute via online participation in this project. I raised concerns about privacy, the extension of use under the law enforcement umbrella, and the circumvention of human rights/civil liberties. While part of raising those issues is derived from being an American and believing in a system of justice where there is a presumption of innocence, certain specific rights against self-incrimination, and an incumbent requirement that the prosecution (aka government) must prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt, another part of raising those concerns was the human error factor.

The Bluffton Police Department and Beaufort County Sheriff's Office in South Carolina have been using digital audio and video recording to capture on-the-scene evidence. Recording eyewitnesses and victim statements at the scene is one way to ensure stories do not change when a trial comes to court. Furthermore South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster notes that police do not have to inform suspects that they are being recorded. In some cases South Carolina police are using small microphones attached to their lapels or collars to record audio from on-the-scene interviews. Audio information can also be stored on a laptop's hard drive affixed in the patrol car, which means that audio recording devices will have copious room for recording. "City Surveillance Cameras Will Also Transmit High-Speed Internet Access"

The city of Buffalo plans to start a $4.4 million pilot project this spring involving five surveillance cameras placed in high-crime areas. The cameras will also be able to transmit broadband Internet connectivity at no cost citywide. Later in 2007, the initiative will broaden to 32 cameras installed near schools, in business districts, and near border crossings. Dorothy A. Johnson, executive director of the state control board, which endorsed the city's plan on March 22, is confident the surveillance effort will help the city dispatch its police officers more effectively. "This is a way that they can make the smartest use of their personnel," she said. The initiative is just one part of a $10 million bundle of projects advocated by Mayor Byron W. Brown and approved by the control board. Other approved projects include a 311 calling system for non-emergency problems and pay-and-display parking meters. Brown now hopes to secure $1 million in federal funds to enlarge the surveillance program to include up to 45 cameras.

Craig Chrzanowski says the department is using new technology to harvest fingerprint and DNA evidence from a 1978 murder case. The case involves the stabbing death of Patty Kerger, then 30 years old. Police say two men broke into a house looking for money. It happened in Lancaster County Monday morning.

The family of three were sleeping when two guys broke in.

"The suspects interacted with them. I can tell you none of them were hurt in any way, shape or form,” said Keith Kreiter, Manheim Township Police.

The 9-1-1 call came from an 18-year-old girl inside, her parents had been duct taped in their bedroom. She heard the whole thing and called for help.

Then the two men came after her, checked her cell phone and by the time they tried to get away police had surrounded the whole house.

When officers got to the home the family stayed upstairs. They made sure they were in view from a second floor window.

Then police moved in from the first floor and arrested one suspect near the garage, a second inside the home.

One of the suspects had a knife but police say it wasn't used.

Manheim Township police say this appears to be a random act.

Police charged a 17-year-old and 22-year old Jorge Chaves with robbery, burglary, attempted theft and unlawful restraint.

Both are from Lancaster County.

This goes in the file cabinet of criminal's gone wild. So with people like this running around you might want to have someone watching your back.

Personally I think there is a place for CCTV technology in our world. Even if a surveillance system only provides evidence that solves a crime. That is better than running completely blind. How about you? Does surveillance fit in your world?

If you walk down your local street past the pump and into your convenient store and look up and scan for 3 minutes you will most likely see the never dying eye of a security camera starring down on you. You are being monitored in the store, maybe at work, and possibly by some jerk's hidden camera in a dressing room. That's right this technology is being grossly abused by certain scum bags. Does this abuse run further than the local dirt bag who uses this tech as a peeping tom or do you think that "Big Brother" will abuse it and start regulating your every waking moment.

I personally am in the middle. I think the scum bags should be prosecuted for their misconduct and any regulation (if there should be any?) should be done to define the proper use of security cameras in the public arena. You can't give any private organization or government under the sun a free for all to do whatever they want with your privacy. Here lies the core issue, how far are we willing to allow the federal government to go, in order to insure our "safety" as if you can no longer protect yourself or your family.

Think of all the rednecks packing a nice shotgun or rifle.

If the 2nd amendment dies, we are gonna be rather helpless if a real live enemy uhmm (islamo-fascists) try to blow up or release biological pathegens on our local business' or malls. Well what can one person do to stop this? I do not know but the option should be there.

You do not think this will ever happen. Well then you obviously do not know our enemy and he wants to keep it that way. You can't fight what you do not know. If we give our currently corrupt government all the power than the "We the people" in the constitution means nothing but ink on paper.

In the search for security how far is too far? Our there any ideal solutions? Do we care enough to have this debate or will be dissolved into a Mexican Canadian stew of madness? Can cameras be used constructively on our borders? for instance Honey Well's MAV
(Micro Air Vehicle).

From 2005 into early 2006 a group of criminals with a leader by the name of Arthur J. Reynolds unleased a rash of burglaries that brought in over $150,000. They hit a total of 45 Dunkin' Doughnut stores during their illegal operation. Purse snatch ends in burglary

A couple lured the victim's family members from their home, then broke in, police said.

Mar 8, 2007 — Newberry Township Police arrested a Mechanicsburg man and woman they say first stole a woman's purse, then lured her family from their home to burglarize it.
"They took advantage of these people twice," Newberry Township Police Chief David Duffy said. "We investigate a lot of burglaries, (but) not often ones that are so clearly planned out and a specific person is targeted."

On Jan. 27, Connie Lausch notified Silver Spring Township Police in Cumberland County after she forgot her purse at a McDonald's inside a Wal-Mart in the Silver Spring Commons shopping center and returned to find it gone, her husband, Donald Lausch, said Wednesday.

"We rushed home that night and changed the locks," Donald Lausch said, worried the thieves would try to get in their home. The credit cards were used before the couple canceled them, but there were no signs anyone tried to break into their home that night, he said.

They didn't expect it to happen weeks later, he said.

About 12:30 p.m. Feb. 12, the Lauschs' 27-year-old son, Scott, was at home and received a phone call from a man who said he found the purse in a shopping cart at a supermarket in Mechanicsburg, police said. The man said he'd stay there if they came to get the purse, according to police.

Donald Lausch said he found the call a bit odd and called Silver Spring Township Police, who agreed to meet them at the market.

Lausch and his son tried three branches of the supermarket in Mechanicsburg and didn't find anyone with the purse. About an hour and a half later, they returned home to find the front door forced open and items missing.

Donald Lausch first looked for the televisions, he said, which were still there.

"It was mainly computer stuff they took," he said. Items taken included a laptop computer, a digital camera with printer, a wedding band, X-Box 360 games and a silverware set, according to police.

Nearly $50,000 reported stolen in home burglary

BRADENTON, Florida — A woman was arrested this week on a burglary charge tied to a break-in that netted more than $49,000 in jewelry, electronics and clothing.

Authorities say Karla K. Moore, 41, broke into the house in the 1200 block of 83rd Street Northwest in October. Moore pawned a diamond bracelet for $50 within hours of the burglary, according to Manatee County sheriff’s reports.

Moore, who was also arrested on charges of dealing in stolen property, has been charged in several other burglaries, court records show.

City man gets 20 years for burglaries of homes

A Camden man once described by a Pennsylvania district attorney as the superstar of burglars was sentenced Friday to 20 years in state prison.

Patrick Burns, who pleaded guilty to 18 burglaries of upscale homes in Cherry Hill, Haddonfield, Voorhees and Moorestown, must complete 10 years of the term before applying for parole under the sentence of Superior Court Presiding Criminal Judge Thomas A. Brown Jr.

Brown left open until May 4 the issue of restitution for uninsured losses to the victims, who included professional athletes.

Victims reported thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry were stolen from their homes.

Burns, 47, identified in court records as a resident of Line Street, had been indicted on 86 burglary counts and pleaded guilty to about 20 percent of them under an agreement between Assistant Camden County Prosecutor Robert Luther and defense attorney Jill Cohen.

Luther said Burns' half-brother, Elijah Brown, 54, of Winslow, who reportedly drove Burns to the burglary locations, is awaiting sentencing.

Cohen said Burns was "in and out of the homes in five minutes. He never hurt anyone. No one ever saw him. Most of the time no one was home."

Burns previously served a seven-year term in a Virginia state prison. He was paroled in February 2004, shortly before the South Jersey burglaries began.

Police said a suspect was shot in the leg during an attempted burglary at a West Dallas fabricating business early Thursday morning.
Police were investigating reports that the owner of the business caught two men attempting to break in and shot, wounding one suspect in the leg. A second suspect ran from the scene of the burglary in the 3100 block of Sylvan Avenue, just west of downtown, police said.
There was no indication that the suspect who fled was shot and the condition of the suspect who was wounded was not known.

What do you think, is it OK to shoot a burglar breaking into your home or business? Is it a situational decision? Or is calling the police all you need to do?

I personally think that if my family is in danger of violence then I would most likely shoot the intruder in the leg or arm as someone else called the police.

Hanover man charged in Penn jewelry heist

A Hanover man has been charged with stealing more than $43,000 in jewelry from a Penn Township home in November, and selling it to pawn shops in Maryland.

Justin Morehead, 19, of 143 Third St., is charged with burglary, criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property. He was placed in York County Prison in lieu of $45,000 bail.

On Nov. 30, Penn Township Police were dispatched to a home in the 100 block of Moore Drive for a reported burglary.

Two residents told police they believed that someone entered their home the day before while they were at work, and removed two jewelry and watch collections worth $43,247, according to court documents filed last month.

A chain lock was cut on a large jewelry cabinet and most of the jewelry items and a box containing several watches were missing, police said.

A third resident of the household told police that earlier that same day, Nov. 29, he had two males – including Morehead – enter the residence for coffee before the males took him to a job interview. He said he caught Morehead in the basement walking around, apparently "scoping out" the residence, police said.

The second male has not been charged in the incident.
Police said the residence was unlocked during the day, and Morehead and the other male failed to show up for their jobs and had the opportunity to return to the residence to commit the burglary.

Records show that some of the stolen items, including a 10-karat diamond/citrine ring, were sold to pawn shops in Maryland.

TYRONE — A 26-year-old Tyrone man faces 14 felony charges for an alleged northern Blair County burglary spree.

Jeremy Verdan Mountz was arraigned Friday morning before Magisterial District Judge Fred Miller and returned to Blair County Prison, where he was being held on another matter, in lieu of $350,000 straight bail.

Mountz’s burglary streak allegedly began in October, when he took a chain saw, gas tank and two hand saws from a Grazierville garage, police state.

Mountz also stole another chainsaw and five gas cans that month in the Hoovers Lane area of Snyder Township, court documents state.

The state police-led investigation also involved Tyrone and Bellwood police.

Mountz is charged with stealing 10 chainsaws, a red pick-up truck, a laptop computer, a power washer, air compressor and Pennsylvania inspection stickers.

Mountz took troopers on a tour of the area, pointing out garages and businesses he hit, according to police.

In one of his interviews with state police, Mountz blamed a dead accomplice for committing the thefts and said he paid him money to get items that later were fenced.

Authorities say that Mountz’s spree took him to Bald Eagle, Hoovers Lane, Gates Hill Road and Pot Pie Hill, as well as Decker Hollow and 18th Street in Tyrone borough.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 6.

Police also said they have witnesses to some of the alleged thefts, along with video surveillance.

Canadian authorities have been feverishly searching for a man believed to be responsible for murdering one person and seriously injuring another. Thanks to the popular video-sharing site, YouTube, their search may be over.

When perusing the video libraries of YouTube, there's a veritable cornucopia of potential things a user might come across. You can find music videos, short films, political commentaries, stunts gone awry... and that Renetto guy just falls into his own odd category.

Thanks to our neighbors to the north (the Canadians, for those of you who are directionally challenged) you can add police evidence to the list of YouTube offerings that one might encounter as well.

Authorities in Hamilton, Ontario uploaded a clip from a surveillance video onto YouTube, showing potential suspects arriving at a local nightclub to see hip-hop artist Sean Price, in the hopes that viewers might be able to aid in an ongoing murder investigation. The video has been viewed over 30,000 times.

A local Hamilton man, George Gallow, turned himself into police on Tuesday. The authorities credit the YouTube video as a major influence toward Gallow's decision to give himself up. read more

Jan. 2, 2007 — It was an early May morning in 2005, and Patricia McDermott had no reason to expect anything but a typical commute to her job as an X-ray technician.

Riding the No. 33 bus through the predawn streets of Philadelphia, McDermott got off at her regular stop — the post office on the corner of Ninth and Market streets.

She began walking south, toward Pennsylvania Hospital, but she never made it to work. Minutes after she got off the bus, McDermott was discovered lifeless on the street by a passing driver.

Police on the scene were stumped at first. Was it a robbery, an accident or a suicide?
"There was blood on the sidewalk," said Howard Peterman, one of the first detectives to respond. "We looked around for evidence for weapons. No ballistic evidence. We looked up to see if she had jumped from the building. … [There was] no evidence to show us what had happened."

The house creaked slightly as I rolled out of my bed. The oak tree shadow from outside my window fell over my room as I was reminded of my loneliness. The moon had just crept out form behind the passing clouds as I listened to the howling wind and watched as the shadows of the tree branches danced about the bedroom form side to side. Thud, thud...glass shatters I was suddenly paralyzed with fear and broke out in a cold sweet. I could literally feel my heart beat through my head. My mind began to race as I frantically tried to decide what to do about the sound of an obvious intruder down stairs. Let me think, uh... the nearest phone is down the hall. So I'll run -- call the police, then bolt for Mike's shotgun.

I put my plan into action and with each running step I pleaded with God to keep this burglary from hearing me. At this point my body was pulsing with adrenaline. Right as I picked the cordless phone up I heard the handle turn to the door at the base of the stairway. The door was slammed open as I dialed 911 and ran to the closet to get the deadly shotgun. Ring ring, hello, please state the nature of your emergency...Someone just broke in to my house and is coming up the stairs, please send the police as fast as you can...Calm down, I need more information what is your name and address? My name is Nancy Dunder and I live at 322 Sycamore St. Redmont, PA, 17552. OK Mrs. Dunder an office has been dispatched...

I turned the hallway light on as the man in a black stocking mask, jeans, and gloves had taken two steps into the hallway. His wide eyed expression was priceless as he stared down the barrel of my shotgun. He said "Now drop that shotgun lady, before someone gets hurt." to which I replied "No the police are on their way and should be hear any minute." After hearing that the man threw a crow bar at me that I barely dodged and ran down stairs and apparently took off with my kitchen stereo, television, and as much food as he could grab. I then heard a car speed away after which about 5 minutes later the police pulled into my drive way.

Knock, knock, knock

I answered the as the police office said, "Mrs. Dunder are you all right? I see someone shattered your side window." and I answered "No, not that one I just had that replaced last week, but I think I will be OK, thank God I was injured" "That is good, now ma'am, can you give me a description of the intruder?" I replied "well not a good one, he was about 5 ft. 8 in. tall and was wearing all black, uh a black stocking mask, jeans, and gloves and carried a crow bar that he threw at me before fleeing my house with a t.v, stereo, and some food." "Did the crow bar hit you any where?" I said, "Fortunately I was able to moved out of its path with in an inch of it hitting my head, by the way officer what is you name? I think I recognize you." "My name is Brian Swing, I grew up about a mile and a half down the road. Which reminds me, my brother owns the house down that way and has recently had a surveillance system installed with an alarm. You might want to consider having doing the same to help prevent something like this in the future.' I answered " I think I will do just that."

Can you tell me is it a half lie or half-truth? I can't believe either, wondering if I'll make it through or give up and die. Oh, how I wish I could fly from the one I see starring back at me, in a mirror, reflection of a heart rejection misrepresentation of the truth looking back at these nonresponsive eyes. Unreal, can't feel, open up the banana and peel through the callused skin, hoping it's still soft with in, that it doesn't go on forever never reaching the end, that things will change around the next bend.

Sitting on the edge, but how I want to make a pledge to the God of kindness and love, oh can't hear him or feel him, but I still know the dove, Holy Spirit above is calling out to me to fall down and cast my crown, forget the wheel and turn in the keys to the real King of all, the one Creator of love, Jesus Christ, my only chance, my only hope for deliverance. Second chances, do they still matter? Do they still work? But as I fall asleep and dream I known that His life answered the mystery. The blood will clear my mind and wipe away the history, cleanse my dirty robe draw me close to the sustainer and intercessor who is ever making cries for my soul, for my heart, to heal the wound from this terrible dart of mediocrity, pacify, sitti'n down and wondering how I'll get out of the mess on my own. It's impossible, and I know it, so here I go to my knees, and cry please, open my heart!!!!! Heal the wound from the dart, soften the hard, lukewarm heart and bring me back to you Father.

Oh, why did I bother to strive on my own for so long, when You were the one calling out from your depths so strong, with a voice of discipline, a voice of love, never letting go of this child you deeply love. Help me see, how you could possible delight in me. Four charged in Rutter's burglary

I recently read this article from a local newspaper that really opens up your eyes to how much financial damage can be done to a business by a few thieves.

Jan 14, 2007 — Four men were arrested and charged with the burglary of a Rutter's Farm Store after state police spotted a large safe in the back of a van stopped during a routine traffic stop Friday morning.
Tyrone Clark, 31, Edward Kinnebrew, 26, David Haynes, 29, and Gregory Giddings, 25, all of Philadelphia, were committed to York County Prison on $250,000 bail on charges of burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy.

The men were arrested 3 a.m. Friday when Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Brian Tokar and Cpl. Wesley Van Wyk stopped a van for a traffic violation along Interstate 83, near the Pennsylvania Turnpike exit.

During the stop, a trooper spotted a large safe and numerous cartons of cigarettes in the back of the vehicle.

The driver ran from the vehicle when questioned by police and was apprehended after a short foot chase. The three remaining suspects were taken into custody.

State police later discovered the suspects were wanted in West Manchester Township for the robbery of the Rutter's Farm Store in the 2000 block of Carlisle Road, according to police. The items in the van were later identified as having come from Rutter's.

The items were valued at more than $10,000, according to police. Numerous burglary tools were also found inside the van, police say.

This is another instance of I am sure thousands of others where a criminal was persuaded by the watchful eye of a surveillance camera. The funny thing is this guy tried to burglarize a surveillance store, what was he thinking?

As I alluded to in my earlier post, I have been working on the surveillance website, Sentry1st.com. Since surveillance goes a long way toward preventing burglary and theft I thought I would do some research on the subject.

In my research I found some relatively recent statistics on burglary and larceny/theft in the United States. In 2005 alone there were 2,154,126 burglaries and in my home state of Pennsylvania there were 56,134 of these nasty housebreak-ins. The larceny/theft statistics were much higher with 6,776,807 cases of theft that same year.

With such statistics in mind you can understand how having a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) surveillance system can be very helpful when it comes to protecting your property, family, and possessions. Now I know stating these statistics could come across as trying to use fear tactics. That is not my intention. I simply want to raise awareness along with presenting a possible solution when it comes to preventing crimes against one's property, possessions, and family.

Hello,

Let see, where to start? Well first of all I want to welcome you to the all new Blue Ripples blog, a place where you can connect with me and others. One place to connect with others by chat or the soon to come shout box at my website Hearts Ablaze. You can also read some of my prose/writings on the site. I also have a very rough draft of a short film I have written called Hidden.

Recently in life (over the past year):

I have graduated from high school and have been working with my dad until I go to school for film making this April. One of the things I have been doing for him is building a website that features surveillance equipment. The site is www.Sentry1st.com and provides pretty much all you would want to know about the helpful surveillance products from Sentry1st. In addition to working on the the surveillance site I have learned how to do polite upfront sales calls to provide a solution for a problem. The problem being abuse, theft, and property damage, with the solution being surveillance. People tend to behave better when they know they are being watched.

Working on this is most likely temporary. I have a desire to go into the film industry and work with people who want to have a positive impact on the world through the powerful tool of television and film. I lean toward the writing side of film, but also have an interest in camera work as well.

As I have stated I have a strong desire to make films that will have a positive effect on society. I have an idea for a film of a modern adaption of the prodigal son. I have other ideas for movies you can ask about or maybe you have a good one. Let me know.
